Holding the Keys

They take your keys to "evaluate your trade" and then somehow can't find them when you want to leave.

The Trap

The Simple Version

If they have your keys, you can't leave. It's a psychological trick to make you feel trapped in the negotiation.

The Scenario: You drive to the dealer in your current car. The salesperson asks for your keys to let the "Used Car Manager" drive it for a trade-in appraisal.

An hour later, the negotiations are stalling. You decide to leave. You ask for your keys.

The Excuse: "Oh, the manager has them on his desk, and he's on a call right now." or "I think the porter moved it to the back lot."

Why it works: It creates a physical barrier to exiting. You have to ask *permission* to leave, which puts you in a submissive position.
